Today is Armed Forces Day. Created on August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day. The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense. The day was created to replace the separate days celebrated by each branch of the service.
Starting today in celebration of Armed Services Day, active duty and retired military personnel and their dependents will be able to obtain a military version of the “America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass.” You must present a current military ID at the park entrance to obtain your free pass. Most national parks will have them at the entrance to the park or wherever park fees are collected.
In Northern Virginia the passes can be found at Prince William Forest Park, Occoquan Bay Wildlife Refuge and Great Falls Park, to name a few. The passes can be used in parks all across the United States.
